Grenada, affectionately called the ‘Spice Isle’ is well known for its spices such as nutmeg and mace, its mouth-watering national dish ‘Oil-Down’ and its beaches, of which several are ranked among the best in the world.
Another key ingredient to be admired from the tri-island State of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique is the warmth of Grenadians and their undying and unmatched patriotism for their country. Annually, the lead up to Grenada’s anniversary of Independence on February 7 is commemorated with love, pride and ceremony.
With this year’s theme, ‘Grenada at 52: Anchored in Faith, Guided by Purpose’, six-year-old Ellina Ince with the help of her mother, Francine Charles, continue their tradition of donning the country’s national colours in style and learning about the island’s history.

Charles tells CaribbeanPulse her daughter’s Independence main outfit pays tribute to the father of Independence, former Prime Minister Sir Eric Mathew Gairy, as well as highlights one of Grenada’s cherished spices, the nutmeg, and includes the 52nd Independence anniversary logo.
Over the years, little Ellina has celebrated Grenada’s Independence Day in style, her outfits spanning over seven years of dedication and love for her country.
However, her mother says this year’s preparation was different from the past, as it was challenging to source the essential materials for what was initially planned. Added to that, Ellina had some health difficulties which required hospitalization.
Charles’ usually eye-catching display of self-baked Independence Day cakes are absent from this year’s anniversary; however, she says there were some donations made with cakes in the community of St John.

Independence Day means a lot, as Charles explains this is the when she spends time passing on her childhood experience to Ellina. “She learns a lot about our history, culture and also our childhood memories that we enjoyed without technology.”
So, what’s the best part about being a Grenadian? Charles shares her favourite thing is standing proud with support by all means whether it is a winning or losing situation.
“I believe in unity and standing for what is right for our country.”
Happy Independence Day to Grenada!
