A Trinidad and Tobago police officer is in critical condition following a shooting incident in La Romain on Friday night.

The injured officer, Police Constable Alex Koon Koon, was shot while responding to a report of an armed suspect along La Plaisance Road around 10:50 pm on April 3.

According to Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), PC Koon Koon was on duty with Sgt Martin and a team of officers from the Mon Repos Police Station when they responded to reports of a man armed with a firearm seated in the gallery of a house.

Officers said that upon arrival, PC Koon Koon exited the marked police vehicle when gunshots were heard coming from the gallery. 

A suspect was subsequently seen fleeing the scene on foot.

It was later discovered that PC Koon Koon had been shot in the left side of his abdomen. He was rushed to hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery and remains warded in the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition.

A search of the area was conducted, but the suspect was not immediately apprehended. 

However, police later detained three individuals—two men and a woman—who are assisting with ongoing investigations.

Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro visited the scene and spoke with officers involved in the search operation. He also visited the injured officer at hospital and met with family members.

Speaking on the incident, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Suzette Martin condemned the attack and reaffirmed the Police Service’s commitment to justice.

“When a police officer is shot in the line of duty, it strikes at the very heart of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and the rule of law we are sworn to uphold. This is not just an attack on the TTPS, but on the safety and security of every law-abiding citizen.

Let me be clear—this incident will not deter us. The TTPS is actively pursuing a thorough and comprehensive investigation, and we will intensify our operations, follow every lead, and bring those responsible to justice.

We remain resolute, unwavering, and relentless in our mission to protect and serve, and we will not allow those bent on disrupting our society to succeed.”

The Commissioner of Police, on behalf of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, extended prayers and best wishes for the officer’s recovery.
