Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Guyanese President Irfaan Ali held separate meetings with United States Energy Secretary Chris Wright on the sidelines of the Shield of the Americas Summit in Doral, Florida.

In a social media post, Ali said he met with Wright on March 6, where discussions focused on strengthening the energy partnership between Guyana and the United States to enhance energy security for both countries and the wider region.

“We explored strategies to maximise our energy potential that would benefit Guyana, the United States, and our region,” Ali said.

“I reiterated Guyana’s commitment to advancing a robust state-to-state partnership and emphasised the importance of private sector cooperation to further develop our energy infrastructure.”

According to Ali, Wright reaffirmed Washington’s strong support for Guyana’s growing energy sector and expressed interest in deeper collaboration aimed at fostering sustainable growth.

The Guyanese head of state said he is confident that cooperation and strategic partnerships between the two countries could help deliver a brighter energy future while contributing to regional stability.

In a video later shared by Ali, Wright said the administration of Donald Trump is focused on expanding energy and natural resource development across the Western Hemisphere.

“This is our backyard. We want strong partners, strong nations and strong energy production, and Guyana is a huge part of this strategy,” Wright said.

He added that as Guyana’s energy production capacity grows, it would benefit the wider region.

Meanwhile, Persad-Bissessar said her delegation also met with Wright during the summit, where discussions focused on strengthening cooperation and advancing shared energy and development priorities for Trinidad and Tobago and the region.

No further details on the meeting were immediately released.

Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and the Dominican Republic were the only Caribbean countries invited to attend the Shield of the Americas Summit.
