Antigua and Barbuda’s Government has approved an interim salary increase for public servants as part of measures to ease economic pressures.
Cabinet approved a five per cent pay increase for all public servants, effective at the end of March 2026, as negotiations continue on a broader compensation package.
The Government said the adjustment is intended to provide immediate relief to workers while discussions on a comprehensive agreement are ongoing.
Speaking at the post-Cabinet media briefing on March 19, Director of Communications in the Office of the Prime Minister Maurice Merchant said the increase had already been accounted for in the Government’s budget.
“This is not new. There were budgetary allocations as the increase was announced in the prime minister’s 2025 budget presentation for the year. It was expected, it was coming and it is here now,” Merchant said.
“So treasury officials have been placed on notice and persons will see the reflection of this increase in their salaries,” he added.
Cabinet noted that the five per cent increase does not represent the final figure, as discussions with stakeholders are ongoing and a comprehensive agreement is expected in due course.
The Government said the move reflects its continued focus on social protection and supporting workers amid global economic challenges.
