The government of St Kitts and Nevis has signed an agreement with Nollywood filmmaker Steve Gukas to produce a major film project in the country and expand collaboration across the African and Caribbean creative sectors.
The deal was signed on the opening day of the Afri-Caribbean Investment Summit in Abuja by Minister Samal Duggins, as part of efforts to strengthen cultural and economic ties between Africa and the Caribbean.
The agreement, facilitated through St Kitts and Nevis’ Department of Creative Economy, follows earlier engagements in , where discussions between the two sides laid the groundwork for the partnership.
Under the arrangement, a major film production is scheduled to take place in St Kitts and Nevis in June 2026.
The agreement also establishes a broader framework for training, mentorship and collaboration among creatives within the global African diaspora.
Speaking at the signing, Duggins said the initiative had the potential to benefit not only St Kitts and Nevis but the wider Caribbean.
He said there was an opportunity to develop multiple films across the region that explore “global Africa from our perspective”, adding that Caribbean storytelling should reflect the diversity and shared heritage of Afro-descendant communities.
“Our perspective is not just insular to each island, but our perspective as a Caribbean region … looking at all the different cultures that exist because there are nuances,” he said. “Those nuances we want to inject into these films.”
The collaboration will also include structured training programmes aimed at developing filmmakers, offering emerging creatives from St Kitts and Nevis and across the Caribbean hands-on experience in production, storytelling and distribution.
Government officials said the participation of a delegation of creatives, cultural practitioners and industry stakeholders at the summit highlighted a commitment to ensuring the partnership delivers tangible benefits for the country’s creative sector.
