A 28-year-old municipal police officer is expected to be charged on Wednesday with the murder of a fellow officer in a case that has shocked Trinidad and Tobago and shown a spotlight on corruption within law enforcement.

In a statement on April 22, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) said the officer is expected to face a murder charge in connection with the killing of Acting Corporal Anuska Eversley at the San Fernando Municipal Police Station on April 19.

Charges of robbery with violence, firearms trafficking and possession of ammunition are also expected to be laid following legal advice from Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard, SC, on April 21.

In a statement, Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro praised investigators for what he described as swift and meticulous work in advancing the case.

“Their decisive action brings us closer to justice for the family and colleagues of Acting Corporal Eversley, and for a nation traumatised by this deeply troubling act of betrayal,” he said.

Guevarro also used the opportunity to issue a warning against corruption within the security services.

“The lure of greed and quick money can never justify the betrayal of public trust,” he said, adding that officers who engage in criminality would be removed from the ranks and prosecuted.

Investigations into the matter remain ongoing.
