Belize recorded a preliminary case of measles involving a 19-year-old resident of the Toledo District who recently travelled to Guatemala.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness said the case was identified on April 24 and that isolation and quarantine protocols for the patient and known contacts were being followed.

Health authorities have also begun a ring vaccination exercise and community outreach in response to the suspected case.

The ministry said the case comes amid a growing measles outbreak in neighbouring Guatemala, where more than 5,100 cases have been reported since December 2025.

In 2025, Belize recorded 44 cases of measles.

Officials are urging the public to ensure they are vaccinated against the disease, warning that immunisation remains the best protection against measles and its complications.

Under Belize’s immunisation schedule, children receive two doses of the vaccine at 12 and 18 months. Health officials also advised unvaccinated people older than 18 months to receive two doses one month apart, while those who have had only one dose are being encouraged to get a booster.

People unsure of their vaccination status have also been advised to seek medical guidance.

The ministry issued a separate advisory for travellers, urging those aged 12 months and older to ensure they are vaccinated at least two weeks before travel, particularly given the regional outbreak.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can lead to serious complications, particularly in young children and vulnerable populations.

The ministry said it would continue monitoring the situation and provide updates as necessary.
