A former Trinidad and Tobago youth footballer and a musician were killed in a road crash in south Trinidad early April 25.

Tyrek James, 27, a former national youth goalkeeper from Marabella, and 38-year-old Marques Figaro of Cypress Ridge, Union Hall, also known as “Rasta Marky”, died when the vehicle in which they were travelling crashed along the Southern Main Road near St Margaret’s.

According to reports, the driver swerved in an apparent attempt to avoid roadworks being carried out by the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) along the western lane, causing the vehicle to cross the roadway and slam into a concrete and steel wall on the opposite side.

James and Figaro died at the scene, while the driver was taken to hospital for treatment.

James represented Trinidad and Tobago at the 2015 Concacaf Men’s Under-17 Championship in Guatemala and is the second member of that youth squad to die in recent months.

His former teammate, Tekay Hoyce, was shot dead in Port of Spain on December 27, 2025.

James also played as goalkeeper for Presentation College from 2013 to 2016. In a social media tribute, the southern school expressed condolences to his family and friends.

“We at Presentation College are saddened to learn of the passing of Tyrek James, who tragically lost his life in a car accident this morning,” the school said.

“Tyrek proudly represented the College in football from 2013 to 2016, as Goalkeeper and his contributions and spirit will always be remembered.”

“May his soul rest in eternal peace. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.”
