Several schools in eastern and northeastern Dominica will remain closed on April 29 as clean-up continued following flooding and landslides triggered by heavy weekend rainfall.

Education Minister Octavia Alfred announced the development after officials from the Ministry of Education visited schools in the affected areas to assess conditions.

The schools affected are Concord Primary, Atkinson Primary, Salybia Primary, Sineku Primary, Castle Bruce Primary, Lighthouse Christian Academy, Temple SDA, San Sauveur Primary, Wesley Primary, Wills Strathmore Stevens Primary, Castle Bruce Secondary and North East Comprehensive.

Alfred said the closure was “mainly to allow for further clearing and  cleaning of roads.”

She said the ministry was continuing to monitor conditions and would provide an update on the resumption of classes on April 29.
