Dominica’s flood recovery efforts are set to receive a major boost after US streamer IShowSpeed announced he will donate all earnings from his visit to the island to support recovery.

Authorities in Dominica are continuing to clear roads and restore access, particularly in the east and northeast of the island, which were badly affected by heavy rainfall over the weekend caused by a trough system.

The conditions forced the streamer, whose real name is Darren Jason Watkins Jr, to delay his broadcast and adjust parts of his itinerary.

When he eventually went live, he apologised to viewers and explained the situation.

“Chat, I really do apologise for the delay. A lot of my plans got shifted because there was a flood here in Dominica. So chat, sorry for the delay. A lot of things have been going on and a lot of plans had to be switched. And chat, all of the money that I will be making during this stream, I will be donating to Dominica for the flood,” he said.

Despite the challenges, the 20-year-old still spent time engaging with the island, trying local foods including a fresh cup of cocoa tea, and taking part in a jump challenge with Olympic triple jump champion Thea LaFond, which he narrowly lost.

The visit forms part of his Caribbean tour, which includes Dominica, Guadeloupe, St Maarten, and St Kitts and Nevis, in collaboration with travel website Expedia.

He has already visited Trinidad, Barbados, St Lucia, Grenada and St Vincent.
