Mothers are special all over the world and most are known for their unconditional love, their ability to make us feel better and well, for just being the glue that holds everything together. In the Caribbean, your back must be broad to take that love with a side of sarcasm that Caribbean mothers are known for.

We know mothers are preparing us for the rough world out there, so here are some of the wildest things Caribbean moms say to their kids and what they mean.

I had a dream

If you’re at a Caribbean friend’s house getting ready to go out somewhere and their mom says, “I had a dream,” cancel that plan. The Caribbean mom won’t say exactly what the dream is, but we have to believe it’s bad enough that you should stay home.

You feel I born yesterday?

Trying to fool a Caribbean mom? Think again. She will let you know she has been on earth longer than you and knows every trick, scheme and lie in the book. Mom is not naïve so don’t try to deceive her.

Your father is a glass maker?

This one is just plain mean and as a child, you’re not sure whether she is really asking if you know what is your father’s job. Most likely, you’re blocking the television or something she is fixated on and you need to move because you’re not made of glass. Couldn’t mom just ask you to step to the side?

Who don’t hear does feel

Mothers usually give advice for your own good. So, if a Caribbean mom believes she has to talk too much for a child to do the right thing, the next time another method will be used so they don’t forget (punishment).

This phrase also serves to warn persons that if they ignore sound advice, be prepared to face the consequences, which might be unpleasant.

Do you want something to cry about?

Imagine you are genuinely upset over something, you’re crying, a Caribbean mother assesses your predicament and believes it’s not that serious. She is in fact actually annoyed by your emotions and says, “You want me to give you something to cry for?” forcing you to suppress your feelings because what is the ‘something’ mom is talking about? So, you stop crying to avoid any further trauma.

I bring you into this world and I could take you out

While you might laugh at this phrase as an adult, it’s actually bizarre to say this to a child.

A Caribbean mom is letting you know in a humorous but dark way that she has power over your life so you better comply. Okay mom, no need for veiled threats.

These are just a few phrases heard in Caribbean households. What other wild things have you heard moms say to their kids. Let us know in the comments.
