Motherhood

The role of a parent is often described as one of life’s greatest joys, but for many, it is also one of its greatest challenges.

There is no handbook for raising children, no universal guide for navigating sleepless nights, self-doubt, sacrifice, or the constant pressure to get it right.

For some women, motherhood arrives with excitement and certainty. For others, it comes with fear, hesitation, or the weight of experiences they themselves grew up with.

Yet somewhere between the chaos, exhaustion and uncertainty, many mothers discover new parts of themselves — strength they did not know they possessed, patience they never imagined they could give, and a kind of love that changes them forever.

For Mother’s Day, Caribbean Pulse spoke with several women about what motherhood has taught them and how the journey has shaped their lives.

Anna-Lisa said motherhood transformed the way she viewed herself and her future.

“I honestly didn’t want to be a mother or get married and have the traditional life expected for women. I did not have any good examples of what motherhood and being a wife should be,” she said.

“I always associated that with women being in ‘shituations’ where they just had to take and endure bad treatment for the sake of family and children.”

When she found out she was pregnant in 2017, Anna-Lisa admitted she was not enthusiastic about becoming a parent and even considered terminating the pregnancy.

“I decided not to at the last moment and I don’t regret that decision,” she said.

“Being a mom really taught me how strong and resilient I can be. It was not an easy journey but I continued pushing on because I want to build the best life for me and my daughter. She is my joy. My light. And I am so grateful to have this opportunity to be her mother.”

For Emily, motherhood became a lesson in patience and understanding.

“Motherhood taught me to be patient,” she said, explaining that both of her sons have Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

“It can be a struggle raising neurodivergent children. But the more I learn about the way their minds work, the more I’ve learnt to be measured in my reactions and giving people grace.”

Stacy described motherhood as teaching her about a kind of love unlike any other.

“Being a mother has taught me about love,” she said.

“The love you get from your children is different from the love you can get from your partner, friends, siblings or parent. It is love in its purest form.”

For LaToya, who recently became a mother, the experience still feels new and unfolding.

“I’m a new mom and every day is a learning experience,” she said.

“I am looking forward to the journey and I hope to become the mother my daughter deserves.”

Marilynn reflected on how responsibility shaped her long before she officially became a parent.

“Being independent and responsible,” she said when asked what motherhood taught her.

“I am the oldest sibling and daughter so from a young age, I have had to be a mom. This is an experience I share with many women, sadly.”
