An Italian tourist has died after suffering injuries during a fire at the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham resort in Bayahíbe, Dominican Republic.

The victim was identified as 45-year-old Francesca Valentino, a resident of Caserta, Italy, who was reportedly visiting the popular resort destination with her Dominican husband.

Valentino, who was a mother of two daughters, had been married to her husband for about a decade.

Reports said the couple were in Bayahíbe, a well-known fishing village and tourist area, visiting friends and family in the community where her husband was born and where they first met.

The fire broke out at the resort on June 19, forcing the evacuation of nearly 1,700 guests and staff members.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. The Dominican Republic’s Emergency Operations Center said preliminary information suggested the fire spread quickly due to strong winds and the presence of thatched roofing materials in part of the resort.

Authorities continue to assess the circumstances surrounding the incident.
