Nevis has recorded its first road fatality for 2026 after a motor scooter crash in Nevis claimed the life of a Pond Hill, Gingerland man on Monday night.

The victim has been identified as Keshawn Merchant.

According to the Royal St Christopher and Nevis Police Force, the crash happened around 9:10 pm along the Island Main Road near Old Hospital Road.

Police said Merchant was travelling from Pinney’s towards Charlestown on scooter PB3431 when he reportedly lost control and collided with a concrete wall along the mountainside of the roadway.

Officers who arrived at the scene found Merchant lying motionless on the road, while the scooter had sustained significant damage from the impact.

Dr Tivone Browne examined Merchant and pronounced him dead at the scene at approximately 9:36 pm.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

The police force also responded to claims circulating on social media that officers or a police vehicle were involved in the crash.

Authorities said their investigations so far have found no evidence to support those claims and confirmed that no police vehicle was in the area when the collision occurred.

Police said the vehicles seen at the scene were responding units that arrived after the accident.

Police urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation remains active.
