Barbados and Antigua and Barbuda have secured places in the second round of the FIBA AmeriCup 2029 Caribbean Pre-Qualifiers after topping their respective groups at the Caribbean Pre-Qualifiers in Georgetown, Guyana.

Barbados completed a perfect 4-0 campaign to finish first in Group B, while Antigua and Barbuda topped Group A with a 3-1 record as the tournament concluded on Sunday.

The two Caribbean nations now join Costa Rica, which qualified after winning the Central American Pre-Qualifiers in March. 

They will also be joined in the next stage by Cuba, Jamaica, Nicaragua and Venezuela, which dropped into the competition after being eliminated in the first round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Americas Qualifiers.

The South American representative is yet to be determined.

Barbados sealed top spot with a hard-fought 96-84 victory over St Vincent and the Grenadines in their final group match.

The contest remained close for three quarters, with the lead changing hands eight times before Barbados pulled away in the final period.

Kyrone Alexander led the way with a dominant double-double of 32 points and 11 rebounds, while adding three assists. He scored 12 points during a decisive third-quarter stretch that helped Barbados regain the lead for good.

Rasheed Maynard contributed 22 points, six steals and two assists, while Carl Thorpe added 19 points, including three three-pointers.

St Vincent and the Grenadines were led by Shad Thomas, who finished with 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.

The Vincentians had opened up an eight-point lead in the second quarter and kept the game within reach until late in the third, but Barbados closed strongly to build a game-high 16-point advantage in the fourth quarter.
