It is the end of an era for Bermuda and the sport of triathlon, as former Olympic champion Flora Duffy has announced her retirement after one of the most successful careers in the history of the sport.
The 38-year-old made the announcement in an emotional almost two-minute video released on Wednesday.
Reflecting on a journey that began when she first discovered triathlon at the age of seven, Duffy said: Across oceans, across finish lines, around the world. You gave me training partners, rivals, friends, and memories that will stay with me forever.”
“You asked for everything. Every early morning, every setback, every ounce of belief. And somehow, you gave even more back.”
Fighting back tears, Duffy acknowledged the difficulty of walking away from the sport that shaped her life.
“I don’t quite know how to leave a sport. Maybe you never really do. Perhaps one day, you simply stop racing. But the lessons stay, the people stay, the gratitude stays. Thank you, for all of it.”
Duffy leaves behind a remarkable legacy.
She became Bermuda‘s first-ever Olympic gold medallist when she captured the women’s triathlon title at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
She also won five World Triathlon championship titles, claimed six XTERRA World Championship crowns—four of them consecutively—and secured two Commonwealth Games gold medals, cementing her place among the greatest female triathletes of all time.
Paying tribute, World Triathlon described Duffy as “a champion, an icon” whose impact stretched far beyond medals.
“From a young athlete chasing an Olympic dream to Bermuda’s first Olympic gold medallist, Flora Duffy’s story is one of resilience, belief and brilliance,” the governing body said.
“Through victories, setbacks, comebacks and unforgettable moments, she showed the world what was possible. As Flora retires from triathlon, we celebrate an extraordinary career from an athlete who inspired a nation, elevated our sport and left a legacy that will last forever.”
Bermuda’s Minister of Tourism and Transport, Culture & Sport, Owen Darrell, also praised Duffy’s contribution to the island.
“While her list of achievements is extraordinary, what has always stood out is the pride with which she represented Bermuda,” Darrell said.
“Every time she wore our colours, she showed the world that excellence knows no boundaries and that a small island can produce the very best.”
Darrell noted that Duffy’s influence extends beyond competition through the Flora Fund, which supports and inspires Bermuda’s next generation of athletes.
“Thank you, Dame Flora, for an unforgettable career and for representing Bermuda with pride on the world stage. We wish you every success in this exciting new chapter.”
