The Tobago Agribusiness Development Company (TADCO) is planning to repurpose the Capital of Paradise I as part of efforts to revive Tobago’s flying fish industry.

The vessel has returned to Tobago, with TADCO saying its arrival marks the start of a wider initiative aimed at rebuilding the island’s flying fish value chain.

According to the company, the project is intended to create jobs, encourage private-sector investment and strengthen Tobago’s food security.

TADCO said it wants to make greater use of the existing vessel and explore opportunities across the industry, from harvesting and landing fish to processing, cold storage, packaging, distribution and value-added production.

“The Board’s decision is about much more than bringing a vessel back to Tobago,” TADCO said. “We are looking at how an existing public asset can be repositioned to help drive the redevelopment of an industry that has historically been important to Tobago.”

The company said rebuilding the industry will require cooperation between fisherfolk, processors, investors, government agencies and other stakeholders.

It believes the initiative could create opportunities for Tobagonians to become involved as producers, processors, entrepreneurs and investors.

Before the vessel is put to use, the Capital of Paradise I will undergo technical assessments, maintenance and safety checks to determine whether it is ready for its new role.

TADCO said the vessel’s return is only the beginning of the initiative, which it hopes will help rebuild Tobago’s flying fish industry while creating new livelihoods and investment opportunities.

The company also linked the project to the wider national push to increase local food production and reduce reliance on imported food.
