Kingston, Jamaica — One worker was killed and another seriously injured after part of a corridor undergoing refurbishment collapsed at Balcombe Drive Primary in Kingston, Jamaica, on Tuesday.
The accident occurred at about 2 p.m. while the two workmen were carrying out refurbishment works at the school.
The Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information said one labourer was crushed by falling debris and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
The second worker sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital for urgent medical treatment.
No students or teaching staff were on the school compound at the time, as classes were not in session.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force, Jamaica Fire Brigade and other emergency personnel responded to the scene.
Technical officers from the Ministry are now assessing the site, while counsellors and social support officers have been dispatched to assist the school community and contractors affected by the incident.
The Ministry extended condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased worker and said it was keeping the injured worker in its thoughts.
