Arrest

Two farm workers have been charged following the seizure of nearly 10 kilogrammes of cocaine at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston.

Police said Leroy Thomas and Dwight Gardner were arrested on Friday, April 10, after officers assigned to the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) обнаружили irregularities in their luggage while they prepared to board a flight to Canada.

A subsequent search of the bags led to the discovery of 3.6 kilogrammes of cocaine in Gardner’s luggage and six kilogrammes in Thomas’ possession, bringing the total seizure to 9.6 kilogrammes, or approximately 21 pounds.

The drugs are estimated to have a street value of JM$5.7 million.

Both men were jointly charged on Tuesday, April 14, with possession of cocaine, dealing in cocaine, taking steps preparatory to export cocaine and conspiracy to export cocaine.

The accused are expected to appear before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Wednesday, April 22.

The latest seizure adds to a growing list of major drug finds across the island.

Since the start of the year, law enforcement has seized more than 3,100 kilogrammes (over 6,800 pounds) of cocaine, with an estimated value exceeding JM$1.8 billion.

Of that total, Jamaica recorded its largest single cocaine seizure on March 21, valued at JM$1.6 billion (JMD$154= US$1), which led to charges being laid against three Colombian nationals.

Director of the FNID, Superintendent of Police Patrae Rowe, said authorities have heightened surveillance at the country’s ports as they continue efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks.

“Our teams are highly alert and have intensified their approach to identify and intercept those who attempt to smuggle drugs within and across our borders, especially those who seek to exploit our agricultural community benefits as a cover for criminal activities,” Rowe said.

She added that the police will continue working with local and international partners to dismantle organised networks involved in the illicit drug trade.
