PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago — Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela have agreed on a new working agenda aimed at strengthening relations between the neighbouring countries following a visit by Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Minister Sean Sobers to Venezuela.

The two countries described the visit as marking “a new chapter” in their diplomatic relations.

During the visit, Sobers held talks with Venezuela’s Foreign Minister, with both sides agreeing on a roadmap for increased cooperation in several priority areas.

The agenda will be guided by Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez and Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, and will focus on mutual respect, understanding and good neighbourliness.

The areas identified for greater cooperation include trade, commerce, energy, agriculture and the environment.

The Venezuelan government also expressed gratitude to the people and Government of Trinidad and Tobago for their solidarity and support during response efforts following the double earthquake on June 24.

Both governments agreed to maintain a permanent channel of communication to advance the new working agenda.

They also reaffirmed their commitment to conducting bilateral relations in accordance with international law and to promoting the economic and social development of both countries.
