GEORGETOWN, Guyana — A LIAT Airlines plane was forced to return to Cheddi Jagan International Airport on September 20 after experiencing an in-flight emergency shortly after departing Guyana.

The aircraft was travelling to VC Bird International Airport in Antigua when the emergency occurred.

The pilot-in-command alerted the Air Traffic Control Tower at Timehri, prompting air traffic controllers to clear the aircraft to return to the airport.

Controllers coordinated the aircraft’s landing and ensured proper separation from other air traffic.

The Aerodrome Fire Service and Cheddi Jagan International Airport authorities were also notified of the emergency and responded.

The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority subsequently praised the Area Control Centre at its Air Navigation Services for its response in coordinating the aircraft’s safe return.

The authority said the incident demonstrated the importance of effective coordination in responding to in-flight emergencies and reaffirmed its commitment to safety in air traffic management.
