CAYENNE, French Guiana — CARICOM is mourning the death of French Guiana President Gabriel Serville who died on September 30 at the age of 67.

Serville had been hospitalised at the University Hospital in Cayenne since September 27 and died on September 30 , according to information provided by the Territorial Authority of French Guiana.

CARICOM expressed its “deep sadness” at Serville’s passing, highlighting his years of public service in national politics and academia and his role in strengthening ties between French Guiana and the regional bloc.

Serville led efforts to establish closer engagement with CARICOM, culminating in French Guiana becoming the Community’s eighth Associate Member on July 7, 2026.

“CARICOM acknowledges his contribution to efforts to promote dialogue and cooperation in areas critical to regional development,” the regional body said.

Serville, who was a mathematics professor by profession, had also spent years in public life leading the French Guiana.

He was hospitalised in mainland France in November 2024 and remained there for seven months receiving treatment. After returning to French Guiana in June 2025, he spoke publicly about his battle with cancer.

He subsequently resumed his political duties and continued to lead the Territorial Collectivity, with the CARICOM accession agreement among the major developments during the final months of his tenure.

The Territorial Authority of French Guiana described Serville as more than an elected official, saying the territory had lost “a man deeply attached to French Guiana, its inhabitants and its future”.
