Update: NANTUCKET, Massachusetts — The US Coast Guard has expanded its search for six people missing aboard a medical transport jet that went down in waters south of Nantucket, Massachusetts.

At a media conference on October 4, Rear Admiral Matthew Lake, commander of the US Coast Guard Northeast District, said search and rescue crews have covered roughly 2,840 square miles over the past 53.5 hours.

Debris from the aircraft was found on October 3 in an area between 80 and 90 feet deep, roughly 20 miles south of Nantucket.

“Our search remains ongoing,” Lake said.

“This is a large and demanding search area,” he added, noting that fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, boats and cutters are being used in the operation.

Lake said the Coast Guard is working to get sonar-equipped vessels to the area to assist with searching the seafloor.

Captain John McTamney said crews would continue searching “until we’re at the point where we are confident that if there were any survivors remaining on the surface of the water, we would have found them.”

The search remains ongoing.
