ST GEORGE’S, Bermuda — The four Canadian crew members aboard the Latitude Air Ambulance aircraft that crashed off the coast of Nantucket have been identified.
The US Coast Guard confirmed the crew members believed to have perished in the October 3 crash as Captain Philip Childerhose, First Officer Thomas Farquhar, flight nurse Sarah Paton and respiratory therapist Jolene Weir.
The crew were conducting a medical evacuation flight from Bermuda to Boston, Massachusetts, when the aircraft crashed off the coast of Nantucket.
Debris from the aircraft has been recovered, but no bodies have been found.
Latitude Air Ambulance paid tribute to its four crew members following the identification, while also extending condolences to the families of the two Bermudian passengers, Marilyn Lavonne Bean, 66, and her son Sergio Wayne Lottimore, 41.
Peter Byl, president of Latitude Air Ambulance, said the crew members were more than employees to the company.
“For everyone at Latitude, our crew was much more than just a name. They were colleagues, friends, and family,” Byl said. “Each one of them brought something special to our company, to the people they worked with, and to the patients and families in their care.”
Childerhose was remembered as a man of great integrity who had an incredibly kind heart and a passion for aviation.
“He was completely devoted to his family, friends, and colleagues. He touched everyone he spoke to and helped anyone in need,” the company said.
Farquhar, known as Tommy, was described as being loved by everyone who knew him.
“He was a kind giant who reflected the love of Jesus: a safe haven and a helping hand for everyone,” Latitude said.
Paton was remembered as a bright and cheerful person whose kindness, humour and generosity touched those around her.
The company said she was a dedicated nurse who devoted her life to caring for others, while her family described her as selfless, hardworking, determined and full of life.
Her loved ones, Latitude said, found comfort in knowing that she was doing what mattered most to her — helping others.
“We will miss Sarah dearly and will always remember her for the love and joy she brought to those around her,” the company said.
Weir was remembered for her love of family and friends and her deep commitment to helping others.
She had years of experience caring for patients as a respiratory therapist in a hospital, while her love of travel and exploring the world made her work with Latitude a natural fit.
The company said her capacity to care for others extended beyond her patients and was especially evident in her roles as a wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend.
Byl said the four crew members were carrying out the company’s mission of helping people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.
“Our colleagues were dedicated to helping people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives,” he said. “That was the mission they were carrying out aboard the Heartbeat 104.”
“We want their families to know that we will not only remember how we lost them, but also how they lived, how they served, and what they meant to those around them.”
Latitude also expressed its respect and deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of Bean and Lottimore.
The company said it continues to support the families of its crew members and employees during the period of mourning.
Byl urged the public to respect the privacy of all six families.
“We know there will be a great deal of public interest in the people who were travelling on this flight,” he said. “We strongly urge that the privacy of the six families be respected and that they be given the space and time they need to grieve.”
The company said it will continue to cooperate fully with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, the US National Transportation Safety Board and other relevant authorities as recovery efforts and the investigation continue.
Latitude said determining the circumstances and cause of the crash remains the responsibility of the investigating authorities and stressed that it would not speculate while the investigation is underway.
Further information may be released once it has been confirmed by the relevant authorities and can be shared while respecting the affected families.
