Former Antigua and Barbuda Ambassador Conrod Hunte has been elected Chair of the United Nations Joint Inspection Unit (JIU) for 2026.

In a post on LinkedIn, Hunte said he was honoured by the trust placed in him and takes on the role “with humility and a strong sense of purpose.”

“The 2026 Chairmanship comes at a pivotal moment, as the JIU marks its 60th anniversary,” he said. “While this milestone invites reflection on the Unit’s legacy, it also presents an important opportunity to better explain our mandate and to demonstrate the tangible value the JIU brings to the UN system.”

The JIU is the UN system’s only independent external oversight body, tasked with conducting evaluations, inspections, and investigations across UN organisations.

Hunte said he looks forward to working closely with his colleagues during his tenure to ensure that 2026 is “not only a year of celebration, but also one of meaningful, impactful reviews that strengthen effectiveness, efficiency, accountability, and coordination across the United Nations system.”

Hunte, who previously served as Antigua and Barbuda’s ambassador to the UN, brings decades of diplomatic experience to his new leadership role.
