Dr. Saheed Sulaman and Lt. Col. (ret’d) Egbert Field

Guyana’s aviation sector has reached a major milestone with the appointment of two of its senior leaders to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Global Ambassadors Programme.

Following nominations by the Government of Guyana, Lt Col (ret’d) Egbert Field, Director General of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), has been appointed an ICAO Champion for the South American Region, while Dr.Saheed Sulaman, Deputy Director General of the GCAA, has been named an ICAO Global Ambassador for Guyana. 

The two-year appointments took effect on January 1, 2026.

In a statement the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority said Field brings more than five decades of experience in military and civil aviation, both as a pilot and an administrator.

He has served as Director General of the GCAA for the past ten years, during which time the authority strengthened its institutional framework and enhanced its international standing. 

He also serves on the Civil Aviation Safety and Security Oversight System (CASSOS), contributing to the development of regional aviation safety policies. I

n his role as ICAO Champion, Field will participate in high-level forums and policy discussions, engaging leaders across government, industry, and civil society.

Sulaman, who has spent 19 years at the GCAA, represents the next generation of aviation leadership. 

He has held several senior positions within the authority and now oversees organisational development, capacity building, and strategic initiatives as Deputy Director General. 

His recent PhD in Management, earned through a Government of Guyana scholarship, further strengthens his capacity to link policy, leadership, and human resource development. 

As an ICAO Global Ambassador, he will focus on engaging emerging aviation professionals and promoting the attraction of diverse expertise critical to the sector’s future.

Both officials have represented Guyana at major international platforms, including the ICAO General Assembly, the ICAO Air Services Negotiation Event (ICAN), CARICOM meetings, and numerous international aviation seminars and workshops, helping to elevate Guyana’s profile within the global aviation community.

Welcoming the appointments, Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Hon. Deodat Indar, expressed national pride in the recognition.

“We are extremely pleased to see two Guyanese appointed by ICAO to serve as their ICAO Champion and Global Ambassador. This is a proud moment for Guyana. Our aviation sector is soaring to new heights, and it is deeply encouraging that our professionals are being given opportunities to represent Guyana on the global stage. Much credit to His Excellency President Ali’s vision in transforming Guyana’s aviation sector. His Excellency’s vision gives Guyana regional and global visibility,” the Minister stated.
