An American Airlines 737-8 Max Aircraft

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investments and Aviation has announced a major boost in travel access to Bimini with the launch of the first nonstop service from the United States by American Airlines.

The new route, which began on February 14, 2026, connects Miami International Airport to South Bimini Airport, offering travellers direct access to the island.

The new service represents a significant milestone for the country’s tourism sector and reinforces the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investments & Aviation’s ongoing commitment to improving access to the Out Islands.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation Chester Cooper described the new service as a transformative step for the island.

“This is a game-changer for Bimini,” Cooper said. “This nonstop connection with a major U.S. city not only enhances accessibility but also signals a new phase of growth for the island’s economy. It is a testament to our ongoing efforts to elevate our tourism product and to partner with world-class airlines to meet global demand for our diverse islands.”

The route operates three times weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Flights depart Miami at 10:05 am and arrive in Bimini at 10:55 am. Return flights depart Bimini at 11:40 am and arrive in Miami at 12:30 pm, using an Embraer E-175 aircraft.

American Airlines said the addition of Bimini strengthens its footprint in The Bahamas and expands options for travellers seeking easier access to the destination.

Managing Director of Operations for Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and Central America at American Airlines, José María Giraldo, said the new route reinforces the airline’s long-term investment in the country.

“With the addition of our seventh destination in The Bahamas, we reaffirm our long-term commitment to the market,” Giraldo said. “As the gateway to The Bahamas, Bimini allows us to continue opening the door for travellers to experience the island’s crystal-clear waters, world-class fishing spots and island charm.”

The new air service coincides with infrastructure upgrades underway at South Bimini Airport. A public-private partnership agreement includes an $80 million, two-phase expansion designed to support increased domestic and international commercial traffic, improve customer service and strengthen economic growth on the island.

The development forms part of the Government of The Bahamas’ broader Family Islands Renaissance Project, which includes airfield improvements, terminal upgrades and the construction of a new passenger terminal. In 2023, the government also launched the Out Islands Renaissance Project, targeting upgrades to 14 airports across the archipelago.

Director General of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investments and Aviation, Latia Duncombe, said the new route is expected to drive visitor growth and strengthen the tourism sector.

“The launch of American Airlines’ nonstop service to Bimini underscores the island’s growing appeal as a premier destination,” Duncombe said. “This new connection will boost visitor arrivals, strengthen tourism, and provide travellers with a seamless pathway to experience the charm and authenticity of our Out Islands.”

American Airlines, which has operated in The Bahamas for 36 years, is also planning to expand its summer schedule.

The airline expects to increase capacity by 24 percent and operate up to 35 daily flights from the United States to seven destinations across the country, including Lynden Pindling International Airport, Leonard M Thompson International Airport, Grand Bahama International Airport, Governor’s Harbour Airport, North Eleuthera Airport, Exuma International Airport and South Bimini Airport.
