A 36-year-old man has died following a police-involved shooting in San Juan, Trinidad and Tobago’s on June 22.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) said officers responded to reports of an armed man in the Farroe Terrace area of San Juan at around 6:40 p.m.

According to police, officers arrived to find a man being pursued by a group of people while allegedly armed with two knives. 

Officers intervened and instructed him to drop the weapons.

The TTPS said the man allegedly approached one of the officers and injured the officer’s hand and upper arm. Police said an officer then discharged a single round from his service firearm, but the man escaped from the area.

A search operation was launched, and about an hour later officers encountered a man matching the description along a bushy track near the San Juan River.

Police said the individual was again armed with a knife and advanced towards officers while making threats.

 Officers discharged their firearms, striking the man.

He was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. He was identified as Abraham Hackette of Farroe Terrace, San Juan.

One police officer was injured during the initial confrontation and received medical treatment. The officer is reported to be in stable condition.

The TTPS said the incident is being reviewed under standard procedures for police use-of-force cases. The scene was processed by crime scene investigators, and the investigation remains ongoing.

For the year, there have been over 14 police involved shootings in Trinidad and Tobago.
