Prime Minister Gaston Browne has called for an end to divisive politics after being sworn in for a record fourth term as leader of Antigua and Barbuda.

Speaking at his swearing-in ceremony on May 1, Browne said his party’s decisive election victory had effectively silenced what he described as “disinformation,” “lies,” and “vitriolic rhetoric” thrown against his government.

Addressing invited guests, the longtime leader—known for his sharp responses to political opponents—struck a more unifying tone, expressing hope that political discourse on both sides would become more civil and grounded in truth.

Browne and the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) secured a commanding 15 of the 17 seats in the House of Representatives in the April 30 General Election, reinforcing his grip on power.

He was administered the oaths of office, allegiance, and secrecy by Governor General Sir Rodney Williams during the official ceremony.

In addition to his role as Prime Minister, Browne will also serve as Minister of Finance, Corporate Governance and Public-Private Partnerships.
Williams, in his remarks, described the victory as both historic and decisive, saying the people of Antigua and Barbuda “spoke with a clarity and resolve that echoed across the region.”

“This unprecedented feat is a testament to the enduring confidence the people place in your leadership, your vision, and your unwavering commitment to the progress of our fair land,” Williams said.

“To lead a nation into a fourth term is a rare distinction that speaks to a deep and unbreakable bond between a leader and his people.”

Williams cautioned, however, that the scale of the victory also brings significant responsibility.

He also noted that public expectations remain high but he is assured that the administration’s experience will help them face the challenges.

Also sworn in was Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin, who will oversee Legal Affairs, Public Safety, Immigration and Labour.

The remaining members of the Cabinet are expected to be sworn in next week.
