An 88-year-old American woman died after reportedly driving a mobility scooter off a pier at a resort in Grand Bahama on May 9, police said.
According to preliminary reports, officers were called to the scene shortly after 12 pm after receiving information that a woman had fallen from a pier and was unresponsive.
Police said the woman, who had arrived on the island aboard a cruise ship, was operating a mobility scooter when she allegedly lost control and drove off the pier.
Investigators believe she struck her head against the hull of the vessel before entering the water.
The woman was pulled from the water and taken to the ship’s medical facility for emergency treatment but later died from her injuries. A local physician pronounced her dead.
Police said an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
Investigations are ongoing.
