Police in The Bahamas are investigating the death of a 67-year-old cruise ship passenger who reportedly went overboard while the vessel was off Grand Bahama.

According to police, officers attached to the Criminal Investigation Department were notified on May 14 about an incident that reportedly occurred the previous evening aboard the cruise ship.

Preliminary reports indicate that shortly after 6:38 pm on May 13, cruise ship officials alerted authorities that a passenger had fallen overboard and required emergency assistance.

A rescue operation was immediately launched and the man’s unresponsive body was recovered from the water. Medical personnel later confirmed there were no signs of life.

Investigators interviewed the victim’s wife, who reportedly told police the couple had consumed alcohol before returning to their cabin to relax.

She said her husband later stepped onto the balcony, briefly held onto the railing and then leapt overboard into the ocean.

The woman further stated that when she looked over the balcony, she saw him face down in the water below.

Police said surveillance footage reviewed during the investigation reportedly showed the man colliding with a rescue vessel during the fall.

An autopsy is expected to be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

Investigations are ongoing.
