An 80-year-old US citizen has died after he was found unresponsive in the waters off Ocean Cay, Bahamas on Sunday, June 21.

Police said the man was found in the South Beach area shortly after 10:00 a.m. and was taken to a nearby cruise ship for medical attention.

Officers and members of the Ocean Cay Rescue Team responded and went to the ship’s medical centre, where medical staff were already attempting to revive him.

Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at 11:03 am.

Police said the man’s wife told investigators that he had been swimming when she heard screams from the beach.

She said she saw lifeguards pull him from the water and begin performing CPR.

A preliminary examination found no visible signs of injury or trauma, and police said an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Investigations are continuing.
