Family members of Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine student Summer McElwee are mourning her death following a fatal crash in St Kitts and Nevis.

McElwee’s mother, Cammy McElwee, shared an emotional tribute on social media after the 22-year-old died in the late-night accident on May 22.

“Never imagined in my life I would ever have to write these words,” she wrote.

“My beautiful daughter, Summer, passed away in St Kitts and Nevis, where she was attending Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine pursuing her dream of becoming a veterinarian.”

Cammy McElwee said she is now making arrangements to bring her daughter’s body back home and described Summer as “my very best friend, my heart, and my world.”

“She loved dancing, the beach, her family, and her friends more than anything,” the post continued. “She had the most beautiful smile and could light up an entire room the moment she walked in.”

Summer McElwee began studying in St Kitts earlier this year and documented her university life on social media, where she had amassed more than 20,000 followers.

Police in St Kitts said the fatal accident happened between 11:30 p.m. and midnight along Half Moon Bay Road.

According to the Royal St Christopher and Nevis Police Force, initial investigations indicate that the vehicle struck a curb wall before the driver lost control.

The vehicle reportedly flipped multiple times before crashing into a building at Half Moon Bay Villas in Frigate Bay.

Police said the vehicle came to rest on its roof with McElwee trapped inside.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The police force extended condolences to McElwee’s family and loved ones.
