Cayman Deputy Governor

Gloria McField-Nixon has been sworn in as the Cayman Islands‘ first female deputy governor and head of the public service, succeeding longtime public servant Franz Manderson, who retired after four decades of service.

McField-Nixon took the oath of office during a special Cabinet ceremony on Wednesday.

Governor Jane Owen congratulated McField-Nixon, describing her as an experienced public servant with a clear vision for strengthening the Civil Service.

“I am delighted to welcome Gloria McField-Nixon in her new role as Deputy Governor,” Owen said.

“She brings many years of experience and professionalism in public service, and I know she has clear plans for supporting our staff and developing the whole Civil Service to meet the challenges of the future.”

Before her appointment, McField-Nixon served as chief officer in the Portfolio of the Civil Service, where she oversaw government-wide human resources policy, public sector reform and corporate governance.

She also accumulated experience across several government ministries, including finance and tourism, and has served as acting deputy governor on numerous occasions.

Speaking after being sworn in, McField-Nixon said her appointment was not only a personal achievement but also one shared with the many civil servants she has worked alongside throughout her career.

“I am honoured to be part of the continuing legacy of dedicated public service and to take up this role with a commitment to building on the strong foundation laid by those who came before me,” she said.

Reflecting on the significance of becoming the first woman to hold the office, McField-Nixon said she hopes her appointment will encourage more young women to pursue leadership roles.

“I hope this appointment inspires young ladies to dream boldly and to see themselves in leadership positions and professions where women are not yet fully represented,” she said.
