Bahamian boxer Carl Hield moved within one victory of a medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, after advancing to the men’s 70kg quarterfinals with a convincing win on Monday.

The 39-year-old, boxing out of the red corner, defeated 25-year-old Osward Talaka of the Solomon Islands 3-1 on points after controlling much of the round of 16 contest.

Hield will now face Northern Ireland’s 23-year-old Jon McConnell on Wednesday, with a place in the semifinals—and at least a bronze medal—at stake.

Celebrating the victory on social media, Hield posted: “One down, 3 to go.”

Meanwhile, Antigua and Barbuda’s Zalaan Jan was eliminated from the men’s 80kg competition after suffering a unanimous points defeat to India’s Ankush Panghal.

Panghal, 20, dictated the contest from the outset and was awarded a 5-0 victory by the judges. He will face Seychelles’ Jade Micock in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
