Authorities in St Maarten are investigating reports of a strong fuel odour near Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIAE) and the nearby lagoon area.

Central Police Dispatch received the report shortly after 4 am on August 26, with the odour reportedly coming from the vicinity of the airport and the lagoon near the WinAir office along Airport Road.

The Fire Department, Coast Guard and other relevant agencies were alerted and sent to the area to determine the source of the smell and establish whether a fuel or oil spill had occurred.

The company responsible for the airport’s fuel operations is also working with PJIAE and the authorities as the investigation continues.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause or extent of the reported situation.

Residents and others in the surrounding area who are experiencing irritation or discomfort from the odour are being advised to keep their windows and doors closed and limit their exposure until more information becomes available.
