A 60-year-old Canadian man has died following a diving incident off the coast of West Bay in the Cayman Islands.
According to the Cayman Islands Coast Guard, the duty team responded shortly after 8:50 am on January 10 to a report of a person in distress in waters near the West Bay Dock.
Initial information indicated that the man had been diving from a boat when he encountered difficulties while resurfacing.
He was assisted back onto the vessel by crew members but lost consciousness shortly after.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was immediately administered by members of the dive boat crew, along with a Coast Guard officer, as the vessel made its way back to shore.
Emergency Medical Services met the boat upon arrival and transported the man by ambulance to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead by the attending physician.
The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service and the Cayman Islands Coast Guard have extended condolences to the man’s family and friends.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
