Clothing optional

The Caribbean is famous for turquoise water and powdery white sand, but a handful of beaches across the region also cater to those who are a bit more adventurous—trading swimsuits and surf shorts to go au naturel.

While public nudity is generally frowned upon, with laws varying widely from island to island (though they often bend a bit during Carnival parades), several secluded beaches and designated resort areas have become popular spots for nude or topless sunbathing.

Here are eight beaches across the Caribbean where visitors can go clothing-optional:

1. Orient Bay Beach – St. Martin

Located on the French side of the island, Orient Bay Beach is widely regarded as the Caribbean’s most famous nude beach.

  • Beach size: About 1.5 km long
  • Sand: Soft white sand
  • Nudity rules: Full nudity permitted only in the designated naturist section
  • Is nudity mandatory? No The clothing-optional section sits at the southern end of the beach near the former Club Orient resort.
  • Interesting feature: The beach is protected by an offshore reef, keeping the waters relatively calm for swimmers.

2. Cupecoy Beach – Sint Maarten

Nestled below dramatic cliffs, Cupecoy Beach is one of the most secluded beaches on the Dutch side of the island.

  • Beach size: Varies depending on tides and storms
  • Sand: Golden sand
  • Nudity rules: Not officially legal but widely tolerated
  • Is nudity mandatory? No
  • Interesting feature: The sandstone cliffs create natural shade in the afternoon and spectacular sunset views.

3. Eden Beach (Hawksbill Bay) – Antigua

Hawksbill Bay contains four separate beaches, but Eden Beach is the only one where clothing-optional sunbathing is allowed.

  • Beach size: Small sheltered cove
  • Sand: White sand
  • Nudity rules: Clothing optional
  • Is nudity mandatory? No
  • Interesting feature: Because it sits slightly apart from the other coves, the beach offers extra privacy for visitors.

4. Pointe Tarare – Guadeloupe

Located on the eastern coast of Grande-Terre, Pointe Tarare is Guadeloupe’s best-known naturist beach.

  • Beach size: Medium-length beach
  • Sand: Light golden sand
  • Nudity rules: Clothing optional and commonly practiced
  • Is nudity mandatory? No
  • Interesting feature: The strong Atlantic breeze makes the beach popular with kite surfers.

5. Anse de Grande Saline – St. Barts

Often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, Anse de Grande Saline attracts both sunseekers and naturists.

  • Beach size: About 1 km
  • Sand: Fine white sand
  • Nudity rules: Not officially legal but tolerated at the far ends
  • Is nudity mandatory? No
  • Interesting feature: The beach sits beside a large salt pond that once supported the island’s salt-harvesting industry.

6. Happy Bay – St. Martin

Accessible only by foot, Happy Bay Beach offers a secluded atmosphere popular with naturists.

  • Beach size: Roughly 1 km
  • Sand: White sand
  • Nudity rules: Not official but tolerated

  • Sand: White sand
