Arrest

A 16-year-old boy is among six people detained by police in connection with the murder of acting Corporal Anushka Eversley and the theft of firearms and ammunition from the San Fernando Municipal Police Headquarters in south, Trinidad on April 19.

Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro revealed during a media briefing on April 20 that three individuals—two women and one man—who were detained shortly after the incident have since been released.

Guevarro said more of Eversley’s colleagues will be interviewed as investigators continue to explore all possible leads, including the involvement of accomplices.

He assured the public that the investigation remains a top priority and that updates will be provided as new information becomes available.

He also confirmed that several of the stolen weapons have been recovered, including one MPX submachine gun, one shotgun, one revolver and 35 pistols.

In addition, 929 rounds of ammunition have been retrieved, comprising 909 rounds of 9mm, 10 rounds of .38 calibre ammunition and 10 shotgun cartridges.

The Commissioner said the Police Service is moving to address the deficiencies that may have contributed to the incident.

“The TTPS is actively pursuing several interventions aimed at not only the San Fernando Municipal Police but across the wider municipal service. These measures will seek to address existing gaps and implement significant changes to safeguard against reoccurrences of this nature,” Guevarro said.

“Immediate reforms are being introduced to strengthen firearm storage and ensure strict adherence to relevant policies and standing orders.”

Meanwhile, Guevarro said an autopsy confirmed that Eversley died as a result of strangulation, along with blunt force and sharp force trauma.

“What was initially suspected to be a gunshot wound has now been clarified by the forensic pathologist’s findings,” he said.

Guevarro said the investigation remains a top priority for the police service and will pursue all leads.
