Voters in Antigua and Barbuda are being urged to act in an orderly and respectful manner as the country heads to the polls in today’s general election.

Chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC), Arthur Thomas, made the call while assuring that the Commission will do everything in its power to ensure every eligible voter can exercise their franchise.

“Let us make this a day defined by peace, respect and unity. Honour the process, respect the rules and support the dedicated officials working to make the voting process smooth and efficient,” he said.

He also encouraged citizens to participate in shaping the country’s future.

“I urge you to come out and play your part in shaping the future of your country. ABEC has gone to all lengths to ensure that you are not disenfranchised in any way,” Thomas added.

He further called on voters to respect the outcome of the election, describing it as a key pillar of democracy.

Polls in Antigua and Barbuda opened at 6 am and are scheduled to close at 6 pm.

Eligible voters are required to present a valid electoral ID to cast their ballots.

Over 34 candidates are competing for 17 seats in the House of Representatives.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne and the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party are eyeing a record fourth successive term in office.
