A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Kaia Sealy, the common-law wife of Joshua Samaroo, in connection with his fatal police shooting in Trinidad and Tobago earlier this year.
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) said Sealy, of Bamboo Settlement No. 1, Valsayn, is wanted for manslaughter and other related offences arising out of the January 20, 2026 incident in St Augustine.
According to the TTPS, Sealy is also wanted on three counts of shooting with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in relation to police officers during the incident at the corner of College Road and Bassie Street Extension.
Police said the warrants have not yet been executed.
In a statement issued Thursday, the TTPS said investigators conducted a “comprehensive and thorough investigation” before submitting a detailed file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Following consultations, the DPP advised that criminal charges be laid in connection with the events of January 20.
Earlier in the day, Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro told a media briefing that investigators probing the police-involved shooting had received further direction following consultations with the DPP.
At the time, Guevarro said no individual was in custody or formally charged and noted that investigators had been directed to proceed with a series of criminal charges linked to the incident.
The TTPS later clarified that the commissioner did not state that police officers would be charged in connection with the matter.
“The Commissioner indicated only that investigators were directed, following consultation with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), to proceed with a series of criminal charges arising out of the events of January 20th, 2026,” the TTPS said.
The police service said further updates would be provided as investigations continue.
The shooting sparked national outrage and protests after CCTV footage emerged appearing to show Samaroo with his hands outside the vehicle moments before officers opened fire following a police chase in St Augustine.
Police had reported that officers attempted to stop the couple’s vehicle in Maloney, but it sped away, leading to a chase that ended when the vehicle crashed into a drain.
Both Samaroo and Sealy were shot multiple times.
Samaroo, 31, later died at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope.
Sealy survived but suffered severe injuries and is now partially paralysed.
