Cayman Islands police are investigating the suspected drowning of an American tourist visiting the territory.

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) reported that the 65-year-old woman, who was visiting the island on a cruise ship, experienced difficulties while swimming near North Church Street in George Town.

The woman was assisted out of the water by members of the public and brought ashore by a vessel while CPR was administered.

She was transported to hospital, where she was subsequently pronounced dead.

Investigations are continuing.
